The museum opened in December 2014, with the major temporary exhibition Volos – Nea Ionia: So Close – So Far, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Nea Ionia refugee settlement.
The permanent display Volos 10 + Stories was inaugurated on 17 May 2019.
