“Girls’ Gymnasium 1921 – 1981, memories”
The exhibition presents photographs, documents and objects, of the 60-year history of the Girls’ Gymnasium of Volos. The duration is until 14 June 2020 (Tuesday to Sunday 10.30 – 13.30, Wednesday and Friday 18.00 – 21.00).
Until the first decade of the twentieth century, girls access to education was limited to all-girls’ public elementary schools, private vocational schools, and private all-girls schools. The Venizelos administration reforms in 1914 enabled the establishment of public secondary schools for girls; in 1917, all-girls three-year post-elementary and four-year secondary schools were created. A result of this reform, and a step towards the emancipation of the city’s women, was the establishment of the Volos All-Girls Gymnasium in 1921
