Courtyard Fortifications

Implemented between spring 2011 and October 2014, the project for the Conservation and Restoration of the Palea Castle in the Municipality of Volos (Budget: €1 million) was included in the Thessalia – Sterea Ellada – Ipiros 2007–2013 Operational Programme. Carried out by the 7th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, the project involved stabilisation, conservation, restoration, and redevelopment along the west, north, and east sides of the fortified courtyard.

Of the section located in the courtyard of the City of Volos Museum, a 40-metre-long segment of the eastern section of the fortifications was restored. In addition to stabilising the remains, the conservation work carried out also focused on making the area accessible to visitors.
